Risk less, grow more: ML-powered risk assessment
In the wake of a global crisis that has consumer wallets stretched and businesses forced into hibernation, the looming question of today is: how to mitigate risk and still pursue growth? “Low risk” and “frictionless experience” are considered mutually exclusive, but with breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), there’s very little reason that should still be the case. The answer to growth isn’t de-regulation or removing fraud prevention mechanisms; instead, it’s what the payments industry has historically always been very good at—innovation. In this session, Nash will discuss:
- How to mitigate risk and stop fraud without blocking growth opportunities
- Responsiveness at scale as a key differentiator
- Machine learning and risk assessment
Nashib Qadri
Vice President, Product & Design, Paytm

Nash currently leads the product management and design teams for Paytm Intelligence (Pi), an ML-powered fraud detection decisioning engine. His focus is to continually improve the Pi product by making the next generation easier to use, powered by human-specified rules and machine learning, and design forward with the ability to author decision-making rules and understand their impact in the field. Prior to Paytm, Nash was in the consumer space, leading product management for Shoppers Drug Mart eCommerce and apps at Loblaw Digital. He was a core part of the leadership team that grew the business to a nine figure behemoth in five years. He also enjoys working with hardware and had an opportunity to work alongside a fantastic team to deliver the Ecobee3, an award-winning best in class smart thermostat. Before his foray into the consumer space, Nash worked at IBM for many years as a product manager and engineering leader, building integration tools for business users.

Leveraging the power of OSINT for Proactive Threat Monitoring
The past year has radically changed priorities for financial crime professionals. New Russian sanctions, escalating competition with China, and first-of-their kind regulations demand greater scrutiny – not only of commercial transactions, but also the participants and the purpose. Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT), utilized by government intelligence agencies, is now giving financial crime teams the ability to surface hidden connections using publicly available data and advanced graph analytics for proactive risk insight. This session will cover:
- Why financial crime teams need to adjust focus from transactions-in-isolation to the actors and participants initiating, underwriting, facilitating and receiving monetary flows
- What organizations can do to better assess the potential for criminality within a financial system using context and relationship networks
- How data and graph analytics can deliver deeper understanding and visibility into the business purpose and suitability of corporate entities as well as their investors and key personnel, for true network risk insight
